Chapter 10
April 16
Edinburgh
The house was dark and pulsing with music from a speaker that was covered in empty beer bottles and red plastic cups. Men in black leather with droopy eyes were splayed across couches and spilled into chairs all around the front room, and women in tight jeans and tiny shirts wound around the furniture to deliver newly opened bottles of beer and to perch on the laps of whoever pulled them close.
Snow stood near the entrance to the kitchen, her upper lip curled in distaste. This was nothing like the parties sheâd gone to back home, and when Drake had mentioned a party with friends, sheâd been envisioning something involving a keg, maybe a drunken card game, and most likely some whisky-flavored kisses. But as she looked around the room, scanning for Drake, her eyes landed on a girl in a minuscule plaid school girl skirt straddled across the lap of Will, whoâd brought Vanderbilt on the back of his bike.
âOh my god,â Filene said, making a face almost identical to Snowâs as she unscrewed the cap of a tube of lipgloss. âThis place is filthy.â
Vanderbilt leaned forward so that she could look at Filene from the other side of Snow, shooting her an accusatory look. âWere you imagining a swimming pool and a maid, Filene? We actually came here with a bunch of guys who have rancid b.o. and probably havenât showered in, like, days.â
Fileneâs eyes widened; it hadnât occurred to her that humans went days without showering outside of a camping trip or maybe prison. âGodâ¦â she whispered. âMaybe we should get out of here.â
Still leaning forward, Vanderbilt hissed at her: âHow in the hell are we getting out of here? Weâre in the middle of nowhere, itâs raining, and Iâm guessing there isnât just an Uber around the corner.â
It was true: theyâd ridden down long, winding lanes on the back of the motorcycles, thrilling at the black night, the feel of cold, misty rain on their faces, and the way the headlights chased across the dark hills around them. But now that carefree joy had given way to reality, and none of the girls were nearly as impressed as they thought theyâd be.
âHey, lass,â Drake said, appearing behind them from the kitchen and snaking an arm around Snowâs waist. âYou want to get a drink?â
Snow shook her head ever so slightly, hoping that he wouldnât take offense at her rejection of his offer. âNo, Iâm okay,â she said weakly, offering him a tepid smile.
âYou come to our place, you drink,â Drake said definitively. Without waiting for an answer, he steered Snow across the room with him, leaving Filene and Vanderbilt to stare after them with open mouths.
It was then that Vanderbilt noticed Will with the oversized schoolgirl in his lap on the couch.
âExcuse me?â she said, putting one hand on her hip as she stared at the scene. âWho does this girl think she is?â
âVandy,â Filene said quietly, reaching out to tug on her friendâs arm.
